Playing video games

Do you prefer single-player or multiplayer games? Why?

First I didn't have anyone to play with and then my internet and hardware were too bad for almost any multiplayer, so I've always been stuck with single-player.
That said, I'm only interested in multiplayer where there's some type of ranking for me to climb. I can enjoy a quick match, but generally such casual gaming is... beneath me.
