I see it the way that there's three choices how to answer.
There's the simplified basic answer of slavery.
There's the vague "state rights" for those who want to avoid the slavery issue and make an excuse.
And then there are smarter ways to not say slavery with some pathos or analysis. Some of that was suggested in the video. I would start with "conflict of interests between North and South" and from there on it'd depend on how much further asker keeps pushing and how absolutely you don't want to mention slavery. Generally you should just yield to trying to display Confederate actions understandable rather than excusable or justifiable.
