Put it in the dish washer? I always use plastic ones.

I have a wood one that my daughter made and what I was told to do is to put baking soda on it and then rub lemon juice to cause a reaction. Let that sit for a bit before rinsing off. It helps a bit, but I have a sensitive smeller and can still notice a slight onion scent.
