Does public transportation include plane flight, long distance train travel? Usually, I consider public transportation to be commuter trains, buses, subways and even taxis.
I used to travel a lot for business and pleasure. I have stories both of good times and bad, but no bad experiences on public transportation. On flights I have been on some horrible flights. I was landing at Midway Airport, the second airport in Chicago and they have shorter runways and when landing they fly very low right over neighborhoods. It was Winter and during a snowstorm we dropped what seemed forever and we were already low to the ground. We made a very hard landing and most of the bins above opened up and things went flying. I wasn't sure we were going to stop before running out of runway.
I decided to take a train trip from Mexico City to the Yucatan. It shouldn't have been an ordeal; it would have been fun traveling through the jungle and seeing the sights. But ended up being a trying time. Because they had to transport the Yucatan military division after the Independence Parade in Mexico City, they dropped off most of the regular passenger cars and also the dining room car. We traveled extra slow because of the added railroad cars and took us 38 hours without food. The train would stop at small jungle villages and normally the villagers would sell food to the passengers, but this time they wouldn't come near the train because of the military. Luckily, I had a bedroom suite and traveled in the same car as some of the officers and their families. Which I will add that the AC quit working 5 or 6 hours into the trip. My ultimate destination was Cancun, so it was all better. But I did have to rent a car and drive across the Yucatan Peninsula which took almost 6 hours over narrow jungle roads.
