Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday ordered the country's military to increase the number of troops by nearly 170,000 to a total of 1.32 million, as Moscow’s military action in Ukraine continues into its 22nd month.

Putin's decree was released by the Kremlin on Friday and took force immediately. It brings the overall number of Russian military personnel to about 2.2 million, including 1.32 million troops.

As a point of reference, the Vietnam War, that lasted from 1963 - 1974 had approximately 2.7 million US servicemen serving in the Republic of Vietnam. Russia is only 1 year into this mess and already at 1.32 Million. So much for Russia's modern warfare machine. Rolling Eyes

Recruitment is largely aimed at the various minority peoples and less to ethnic Russians. And more generally, happens more strongly in areas where Putin has least support (with exception of Moscow).

I'm wondering what will happen in Chechnya after Kadyrov dies. Seems he has months at best and you'd imagine people there would be quite tired of having such Moscow backed brutal local dictator who throws his people to Ukraine meat grinder to please Putin, who previously crushed the regions last attempts for independence.
And I'm not sure if there's a clear next in line, Kadyrov is trying to get his teen son take over but I don't expect that to work out.

One can always hope there will eventually rise wider protesting in Russia, but that seems unlikely until Putin dies.
