Now and then he makes this kind of comments that harm credibility of himself, Ukraine and parties supporting them.
But Cold War ended 30 years ago. Whatever was left of its policies were broken 10 years ago when Russia occupied Crimea.
Considering there's been for over two years a hundred times larger Russian invasion into Ukraine, this act is a mere technicality - though important one, as it makes it hard for Russia to demand truce with current frontlines, as that would be yielding Russian territory to foreign control. It has been absurd that Ukraine has this long been fighting with one hand tied, in hope that rest of the world would do something to actually stop Russia if they hold back from escalating the war.
And I thought this war was about Ukraine being an independent country that has right to make its own decisions. If they have to ask another country permission on how to defend their country, they might've as well just agreed with Russia never to join NATO in the first place.
